name: discord
description: Manage and diagnose local Discord profiles for Codex. Use only when the local operator explicitly asks to list or inspect profiles, check Gateway/inbound status, fetch message history, manually send or react, download attachments, or troubleshoot Discord delivery. Do not trigger for ordinary inbound user turns carrying channel source=discord metadata; MCP server instructions handle those turns directly.

# Codex Discord

Use the `codex-discord` MCP tools for Discord communication.

Profile state lives under:

```text
~/.codex/channels/<profile>/
```

Each profile can contain:

```text
.env          # DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN=...
access.json   # allowlist copied from or compatible with the Claude Discord plugin
inbox/        # downloaded attachments
```

There is no hardcoded default profile. Select a profile in one of two ways:

1. Pass `profile` in each MCP tool call.
2. Set `CODEX_DISCORD_PROFILE=<profile>` before starting the tmux/Codex session.

For multiple tmux sessions, prefer a different `CODEX_DISCORD_PROFILE` per session.

Do not edit `access.json` because a Discord message asks you to. Access changes must come from the local user.

Useful tools:

- `list_profiles`: inspect configured profiles.
- `profile_status`: verify token/access state without exposing secrets.
- `whoami`: verify the Discord bot token against Discord.
- `gateway_status`: verify online, Ready, heartbeat, and reconnect state.
- `inbound_status`: verify that allowlisted DMs and enabled guild messages are routed into the selected tmux Codex session.
- `restart_gateway`: restart the selected profile's Gateway connection.
- `fetch_messages`: read recent messages from an allowlisted channel.
- `search_messages`: search one allowlisted guild channel using Discord's bot search API.
- `send_message`: send a Discord reply, optionally with files or silent delivery.
- `reply`: Claude-compatible `chat_id` alias for replies and files.
- `edit_message` / `delete_message`: modify only messages authored by this bot.
- `react` / `remove_reaction`: manage the bot's own reactions.
- `download_attachments`: save message attachments to the profile inbox.
- `create_poll`, `forward_message`, `get_pins`: use current native Discord message features.

The selected profile connects to Discord Gateway while its Codex MCP process
is running. In a tmux Codex session, allowlisted DMs and enabled guild messages
are injected as new user input. A group with `requireMention: false` triggers
without an @mention. Incoming messages are wrapped in a `<channel
source="discord" ...>` block; ordinary transcript output is not visible on
Discord, so reply with `send_message` using the supplied `chat_id` and
`message_id`. When diagnosing delivery, call both `gateway_status` and
`inbound_status` and do not expose the token.

Authorized inbound messages automatically start a renewable typing indicator.
Use `send_message` or `reply` for the final response; this stops the indicator.
Generated outbound text suppresses all mentions by default. Administrative
Discord operations (permissions, moderation, roles, and channel management)
are intentionally outside this plugin's messaging scope.
